11:08 EDTAMZNAnalyst thinks Amazon needs more services to justify price hike
After Amazon.com (AMZN) announced today that it was raising the price of its Prime service, UBS predicted that the company would have to augment the offering with new services, and stated that the company may have to spend more on marketing Prime. WHAT'S NEW: Amazon.com earlier today said that it was increasing the price of its Prime service for regular members to $99 from $79. The e-commerce giant is raising the price of Prime for students to $49 from $39. ANALYST REACTION: In a note to investors earlier today, UBS analyst Eric Sheridan reiterated his theory that Amazon would have to provide Prime users with additional services in order to justify the price increase. Sheridan first disseminated the theory on February 2, and today he noted that media outlets have reported that the company is developing a streaming music service. Additionally, Amazon may have to spend more money on marketing Prime in the wake of the price increase, Sheridan believes. The analyst kept a $375 price target and Neutral rating on the stock. PRICE ACTION: In late morning trading, Amazon.com advanced $9.10, or 2.5%, to $380.
