10:44 EDTAMZNLong-time Amazon bull sees revenue topping $200B by 2020
Several analysts have been upbeat on Amazon (AMZN) recently, after the company reported stronger than expected results last week and broke out details on its Web Services unit for the first time. Robert Baird analyst Colin Sebastian, however, is a long-time Amazon bull and predicted in a note to investors today that the company would generate $200B in revenue by 2020, with 5%-7% consolidated segment operating income. Analysts' consensus estimate for the company's fiscal year 2016 revenue is near $121B. WHAT'S NEW: Amazon's higher margin businesses, including Marketplace and its cloud services business, AWS, should subsidize its near-breakeven retail business, Sebastian believes. The company's disclosure of AWS' financial metrics supports the viability of that approach, according to the analyst. Meanwhile, Amazon will look to boost its retail revenue using a variety of means, including lower prices and local delivery, wrote Sebastian. Amazon is likely to continue to look to boost its revenue at the expense of its margins, but its consolidated segment operating income will be 5%-7% by 2020, according to Sebastian, who kept a $465 price target and Outperform rating on the shares. Though he did not update his price target, Sebastian noted that a "sum-of-the-parts" analysis suggests upside towards the $500 range for Amazon shares. WHAT'S NOTABLE: JPMorgan upgraded Amazon following its results last week, and many firms, including Citi, Cantor, and Deutsche Bank, raised their price targets on the name. PRICE ACTION: In mid-morning trading, Amazon slipped fractionally to trade near to $434 per share.
