Applied Materials announced that it has completed the assembly of a superconducting fault current limiter, or SCFCL, system for installation and on-grid testing at the Knapps Corners substation owned and operated by Central Hudson Gas and Electric in New York. This SCFCL system, which is scheduled to become operational in May, is designed to help protect Central Hudson's electricity grid from the potentially devastating effects of electrical faults. Applied Materials is teaming with the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, or NYSERDA; Central Hudson, a New York State regulated electric and gas utility; SuperPower a manufacturer of high-temperature superconducting wire; and Three-C Electrical, a utility systems integrator, to complete the utility-scale implementation.
