06:55 EDTAAPLApple launches new iOS 8 phones with 'kill switch'
Attorney General Eric Schneiderman and San Francisco District Attorney George Gascon revealed that new iPhones sold with iOS 8 will include Apple’s theft deterrent system, Activation Lock, as a default setting. This marks the first time in the history of the smartphone industry that theft deterrent technology is available by default on new products. In addition to being standard on the new iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, newly-sold iPhones will also prompt users to upgrade to iOS 8. Additionally, the new operating system can also be installed on most previous models of iPhones. As co-chairs of the Secure Our Smartphone, or S.O.S. Initiative, Attorney General Schneiderman and District Attorney Gascon led the effort to call on the wireless industry to address the global rise in smartphone thefts. The ultimate goal of SOS is for every mobile device to have a “kill switch” on by default. A default solution is imperative because it ensures that the device will be worthless to thieves. 05:40 EDTAAPLApple says will never allow government access to servers
Apple launched a website dedicated to privacy with a message from its CEO Tim Cook. The message stated in part, "We don’t build a profile based on your email content or web browsing habits to sell to advertisers. We don’t ‘monetize’ the information you store on your iPhone or in iCloud. And we don’t read your email or your messages to get information to market to you. Our software and services are designed to make our devices better. Plain and simple...Finally, I want to be absolutely clear that we have never worked with any government agency from any country to create a backdoor in any of our products or services. We have also never allowed access to our servers. And we never will."
