News Breaks | | | | October 22, 2012 | | 10:57 EDT | | ABT | Abbott announces results from analysis of extension of Humira studies Abbott announced results from an analysis of three-year long-term data from an ongoing open-label extension of the HUMIRA ULTRA 1 and ULTRA 2 studies. Adult patients with moderately to severely active ulcerative colitis who have had an inadequate response to certain other medications and were treated with HUMIRA were evaluated for symptom improvement for up to three years. In this long-term analysis, ulcerative colitis activity was assessed using the Partial Mayo score, which does not include endoscopic findings. Results showed: A reduction in observed mean Partial Mayo score from 5.9 at the time of first dose of HUMIRA to 1.4 at week 172 of HUMIRA therapy; a 55.3% remission rate, per Partial Mayo score at week 60 of the extension study, as assessed in the intent-to-treat patients who enrolled in the open-label study extension. The data were presented this week at the American College of Gastroenterology Annual Scientific Meeting in Las Vegas and the United European Gastroenterology Week Annual Meeting in Amsterdam. The company said, "Abbott is committed to further investigate the long-term use, efficacy and safety of HUMIRA in these patients."

Results from ACCESS-EU, a European prospective study that enrolled 567 patients at 14 sites, have been published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. In addition, findings of the investigator-sponsored German TRAnscatheter Mitral Valve Interventions registry, which enrolled 1,064 patients at 20 German sites, were recently published in EuroIntervention. Abbott's MitraClip System, which received CE Mark in 2008 and is commercially available in Europe and other international markets, is an investigational device in the United States. The device is delivered to the heart through the femoral vein, a blood vessel in the leg, and is designed to reduce MR by clipping together a portion of the leaflets of the mitral valve to allow the heart to more efficiently pump blood.
