07:57 EDTABXBarrick could resume talks with Newmont as soon as today, WSJ says
After The Wall Street Journal said Friday that talks between Barrick Gold (ABX) and Newmont Mining (NEM) about a potential merger had broken down, the news paper stated in an update last night that Barrick could decide as early as today whether it wants to pursue further discussions, citing a person familiar with the matter. The difficult operating environment and potential savings could make a deal something that must be considered, as people familiar with the matter say the two companies think they could save as much as $1B from synergies, the report said.
