10:17 EDTHPQAnalyst says new competition unlikely to derail 3D printer leaders
Additional competition in the 3D printer market is not likely to cripple the leading incumbent players in the market, 3D Systems (DDD) and Stratasys (SSYS), Oppenheimer wrote in a note to investors today. WHAT'S NEW: Noting that some believe the expected entrance of HP (HPQ) into the 3D printer sector will crush 3D Systems and Stratasys, Oppenheimer analyst Holden Lewis wrote that he disagrees with that thesis. The new players, including HP and Carbon3D, could find niches within the sector, but their printers will not perform every task, the analyst stated. Moreover, HP is likely looking to use technology that may be inferior and that is unlikely to enable the tech giant to dominate the sector, the analyst stated. Conversely, Carbon3D's technology "looks truly innovative," but little is known about it at this point, leaving many questions, according to Lewis. It is unknown if the printers can make final parts, he wrote. The printers from HP and Carbon3D "are not clearly superior, do-everything machines," and "it is far from clear" that they will move beyond a few niche areas, wrote Lewis, who kept Outperform ratings on 3D Systems and 3D printer maker ExOne (XONE) and a Perform rating on Stratasys. WHAT'S NOTABLE: In an article in February, Barron's warned that HP's expected entrance into the 3D printing market is " a wild card" for the sector, and quoted a William Blair analyst as saying that the company is "probably the clearest threat" to 3D Systems and Stratasys. According to Barron's, HP has said that its technology is ten times faster than current 3D printers. PRICE ACTION: In early trading, 3D Systems fell 1.6% to $27, Stratasys slipped fractionally to $52.70, and ExOne lost 1.8% to $13.41. All three are trading near their 52-week lows.

06:20 EDTAAPLCiti says Wall Street underestimating demand for iPhone 6
Citigroup analyst Jim Suva told investors this morning that his firm's global due diligence indicates the consensus on Wall Street is underestimating the continued demand for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus as well as the demand for the higher memory density phones. Suva points out that many locations are still selling out daily of the more popular 128GB iPhone, even though the launch occurred six months ago. He believes Apple's quarterly results on April 27 will beat the consensus sales expectation by at least $1B and that earnings will top estimates by at least 2% even after adjusting for negative foreign currency moves. Suva also expects Apple to announce an increase in its share buyback program to $120B from the $90B currently as well as a 10%-plus dividend raise. He added Apple shares to Citi's US Focus List, which reflects the firm's highest conviction stock ideas, and keeps a Buy rating on the name with a $145 price target. The stock closed yesterday down $1.94 to $124.43.

09:04 EDTXU.S. Steel to adjust production at Minntac plant
United States Steel announced it will adjust operations and temporarily idle a portion of its Minnesota Ore Operations – Minntac plant in Mt. Iron, Minn., effective June 1. This action is due to the company's current inventory levels and ongoing adjustment of its steelmaking operations throughout North America. The company will continue to operate Minntac at reduced capacity in order to meet customer demand. The company routinely adjusts production at its operating facilities to reflect market fluctuations. These ongoing operational adjustments are a result of challenging market conditions that reflect the cyclical nature of the industry. Global influences in the market, including a high level of imports, unfairly traded products and reduced steel prices, continue to have an impact. As part of the temporary idling, all employees at Minntac have been advised of the upcoming temporary idling and are being issued notices under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act. The number of employees impacted will be based upon operational and, or maintenance needs.

12:54 EDTXSteel stocks trade higher ahead of Congressional Steel Caucus hearing
Steel manufacturing stocks are trading higher ahead of tomorrow's testimony at a Congressional Steel Caucus hearing. WHAT'S NEW: The United Steelworkers, or USW, will be joining Chief Executive Officers of steel companies and other representatives from the steel industry on Thursday, March 26 on Capitol Hill to testify at a Congressional Steel Caucus hearing on the "State of American Steel." The USW and the steel executives will speak to the state of the steel industry and how policies on trade are impacting manufacturing in the steel industry. WHAT'S NOTABLE: According to the American Iron and Steel Institute, year-to date total and finished steel imports are 7.977M and 6.41M net tons, respectively, up 23% and 36%, respectively, vs. the same period in 2014. In the past month, steelmakers including Nucor (NUE), AK Steel Holding (AKS) and Steel Dynamics (STLD) all issued profit warnings. On March 19, Nucor said "Overall operating performance at the steel mills segment for the first quarter of 2015 is expected to decrease significantly compared to the fourth quarter of 2014," citing lower selling prices and margins resulting from the "exceptionally high level of imports flooding the domestic market." The company also said "Total imports increased 38% in 2014 compared to 2013, with imports accounting for approximately 34% of the total domestic shipments in 2014. Global overcapacity built by state-owned enterprises is the biggest risk factor to our business." This morning, United States Steel Corporation (X) announced plans to consolidate its North American Flat-Rolled operations and temporarily idle its Granite City Works operations. The company noted that the consolidation is a result of challenging market conditions that reflect the cyclical nature of the industry. Global influences in the market like reduced steel prices, unfair trade, imports and fluctuating oil prices, continue to have an impact on the business, the company said. Publicly traded companies in the space including U.S. Steel , AK Steel and Steel Dynamics are all trading higher while Nucor is fractionally lower in midday trading.

Cantor Fitzgerald analyst Brian White raised his price target on Apple shares to $180 from $160, which equates to a $1 trillion market capitalization. He believes the market will reward the tech giant with a higher price-to-earnings multiple given media reports of new areas of future innovation, the company’s entrance into a new product category with next month's watch launch, and its commitment to returning cash to shareholders. White thinks a web TV service, as reported last week by the Wall Street Journal, could be a "stepping stone" for Apple to eventually launch a full blown TV product. He adds that Apple's iPhone portfolio and position in China have "never been stronger." White keeps a Buy rating on the stock. Apple shares closed Friday at $125.90.

08:13 EDTAAPLPendrell unit: Court rejects attempts to limit scope of DRM patents
ContentGuard Holdings, a subsidiary of Pendrell Corporation (PCO), announced that on Friday, March 20, Judge J. Rodney Gilstrap of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas issued a 144 page Claim Construction Order in lawsuits ContentGuard filed against several companies who continue to use its patented Digital Rights Management solutions without a license, including Apple (AAPL), Amazon.com (AMZN), DirecTV (DTV), Google (GOOG), HTC, Huawei, Motorola Mobility and Samsung Electronics (SSNLF). In his order, Judge Gilstrap interpreted the language in ContentGuard’s patents in a manner that fully preserves the breadth of ContentGuard’s patented Digital Rights Management technologies. These technologies were developed to enable the distribution of digital media over the Internet and other networks, including cellular and satellite networks, and provide innovative solutions to problems that were once thought to be unsolvable. “We are very pleased with the Court’s ruling,” commented James Baker, ContentGuard’s Vice President for Licensing and Strategic Development. “We believe these claim constructions demonstrate that the online stores defendants provide for buying and renting DRM-protected movies, videos, books, and music and devices that play, run, display or print this DRM-protected content infringe ContentGuard’s pioneering DRM patents.”

12:45 EDTAAPLAnalyst says Apple deserves higher multiple ahead of TV streaming foray
Given Apple's (AAPL) reported foray into streaming TV, the stock's multiple should be higher, Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty wrote in a note to investors today. WHAT'S NEW: Media reports about Apple's new streaming TV service support Morgan Stanley's thesis that the stock should trade at a multiple of 18x-19x, Morgan Stanley analyst Kate Huberty wrote in a note to investors today. Companies with content platforms trade at that level, on average, the analyst noted. Apple's stock is currently trading slightly below 15 times consensus 2015 profit estimates for the company. Noting that Apple has already announced a new online streaming deal with Time Warner's (TWX) HBO, and the New York Post reported that the tech giant is willing to share some viewership data with content owners, Huberty thinks that an Apple TV service seems to be more likely now than in past years. The analyst reiterated her belief, expressed in a previous note, that Apple should be compared to other companies that provide content platforms. Like other platform companies, Apple charges premium prices, its products are used every day by consumers, it has recurring revenue ,and it has the opportunity to expand its total market, the analyst stated. According to Huberty, TV is an $800B market, and the TV streaming market may be ready for prime time, as 20% of pay TV customers plan to cut the cord in the next year, a Morgan Stanley survey showed. The analyst kept a $160 price target and Overweight rating on the shares. WHAT'S NOTABLE: Taking a less favorable view of Apple on March 18 was research firm Jefferies, which predicted that the growth of the company's iPhones would decelerate further next quarter. The firm predicted that strong iPhone sales in China would propel the tech giants profit for the current quarter more than 10% above expectations, but it kept a Hold rating on the shares. PRICE ACTION: In early afternoon trading, Apple was fractionally higher near $128 per share.

They believe Apple's investments in manufacturing should be a key consideration for investors and point out the $40B spent by the iPhone maker over the past five years, with 80%-plus invested in manufacturing, is similar to GM, Ford (F) and Daimler-Benz and well above Tesla's $1.8B cumulative capex. The analysts say there is a "lot to think about" regarding Apple's move into the car space, including the regulatory environment. They keep a Buy rating on the tech giant with a $150 price target. Shares of Apple closed yesterday down 97c to $127.50.

08:14 EDTAAPLWorst case scenario unlikely for Ericsson in Apple lawsuit, says Bernstein
Noting that Apple (AAPL) and Ericsson (ERIC) are involved in patent litigation in which Apple has asked the court to limit Apple's royalty payments to Ericsson to the smallest saleable component containing Ericsson's technology, Bernstein says that Ericsson's IP revenue would be reduced to almost nothing if the court grants Apple's request. However, the firm does not believe that Apple's request has a good legal rationale, and it thinks that the court is "extremely unlikely" to grant it. As a result, the firm is "relaxed" about Ericsson's outlook. It keeps an Outperform rating on the shares.
