News Breaks | | | | September 17, 2012 | | 16:19 EDT | | GRPN, DHR, AAPL, THLD, IRIS, JAZZ, GM | On The Fly: Closing Wrap Stocks on Wall Street were lower, taking a pause from a recent rally that put the S&P near highs it hasn't seen in five years. Stock futures, which had already been weak, softened further after the disappointing Empire State manufacturing reading, which led to a lower opening for the broader market. Against the backdrop of the soft domestic data and rising yields in peripheral European sovereign bonds, investors saw little reason to step in and stem the selling. Dueling trade complaints from the United States and China to the World Trade Organization did little to build confidence either. The averages continued to drift lower slowly but fairly steadily most of the whole session, with an unexplained late day fall in the price of oil lending further fuel to the downdraft... ECONOMIC EVENTS: Domestically, the New York Fed’s measure of factory activity in the state, the “Empire State” index, slid to minus 10.41, versus expectations for it to improve to minus 2. Also, oil prices declined sharply before trading in New York ended for the day, though the White House responded to rumors by saying there was "no change" for strategic petroleum reserves and the CME Group said it was not aware of any technical issues responsible for the crude sell-off... COMPANY NEWS: Apple (AAPL) said that pre-orders for its latest iPhone doubled the prior record for the device by topping 2M sold in 24 hours. The news, along with more positive commentary and price target increases from Street analysts, helped push shares up $8.50, or 1.23%, to $699.78... General Motors (GM) has been rebuffed by the Treasury Department in pleas to the government to sell its remaining stake in the auto maker at a loss, according to a Wall Street Journal report... MAJOR MOVERS: Among the notable gainers were IRIS International (IRIS), up $6.12, or 45.60%, to $19.54, after agreeing to be acquired by Danaher (DHR) for $19.50 per share, and Jazz Pharmaceuticals (JAZZ), up $7.17, or 14.90%, to $55.29, following a ruling in a patent case for its narcolepsy drug Xyrem that an analyst said appeared to be favorable. Noteworthy losers included Threshold Pharmaceuticals (THLD), down $1.72, or 19.72%, to $7.00, after the company said one of its cancer drugs did not have a statistically significant impact on overall survival in a trial, and Groupon (GRPN), down 52c, or 9.87%, to $4.75, as Evercore added the stock to its "Conviction Sell" list and a firm that tracks local advertising and commerce said the online deals marketplace is maturing and may be near saturation... INDICES: The Dow lost 40.27, or 0.30%, to 13,553.10; the Nasdaq fell 5.28, or 0.17%, to 3,178.67; and the S&P 500 dropped 4.58, or 0.31%, to 1,461.19. | |
