11:09 EDTRSHBest Buy shares decline as Best Buy reports Q2 sales drop
Shares of multi-channel Best Buy (BBY) are retreating after the firm reported that sales declines continued through the second quarter. WHAT'S NEW: Best Buy's Q2 earnings per share from continuing operations was 44c, exceeding analysts' consensus estimates of 31c. The company's Q2 revenue was $8.9B, which was slightly lower than analysts' $8.99B consensus. Same-store-sales for the quarter declined 2.7%, which is better than the overall industry sales decline of 2.5% as reported by NPD. Best Buy Chief Executive Officer Hubert Joly noted that traffic to the company's brick and mortar stores continued to decline as consumers research and buy online. Joly noted that in-store conversion and online traffic continued to increase during the quarter. Joly said that in the back half of the year, the retailer plans to intensify its investments in customer-facing initiatives. Chief Financial Officer and Chief Administrative Officer Sharon McCollam reiterated that industry-wide sales are continuing to decline in many of the consumer electronics cateogries in which it competes, and said the retailer is seeing "ongoing softness" in the mobile phone category ahead of new product launches. She forecast SSS down in the low single digits for both the third and fourth quarters and sees Q3 and Q4 operating income in line with the first half of the year. For the back half of the year, McCollam sees continued industry softness and higher promotionality in Canada and China. WHAT'S NOTABLE: During the company's conference call, Best Buy said that it is "encouraged" by the response to 4K televisions and aims to expand its holiday gift centers within stores. The company's CFO McCollam said that the firm's mobile phone category is "complicated to forecast." She feels that the disruption of carriers "could have impact" that the technology retailer did not anticipate. McCollam said that despite great excitement for some high-profile phone launches, there is still a great deal of competition in the lower-end of the phone market. In terms of the start of the upcoming quarter, Best Buy feels that the beginning has been "in-line" with expectations. ANALYST OPINION: ISI analyst Greg Melich feels that Best Buy's Q2 EPS beat was due to a slightly less dramatic decrease in gross margins and improved cost controls. He feels that the market is likely to pay close attention to continued sales decreases when predicting the rest of the year despite the better than anticipated quarterly EPS results. Melich said that he will keep an eye out for positive signs that Q4 will experience an improvement given the highly promotional and competitive landscape last year. The analyst keeps the stock with a neutral rating and a $31.99 price target. PRICE ACTION: In morning trading, Best Buy fell $1.59, or 4.97%, to $30.40. OTHERS TO WATCH: Best Buy peers include RadioShack (RSH) and hhgregg (HGG).

11:15 EDTAAPLGT Advanced retreats after analyst downgrades stock
Shares of sapphire maker GT Advanced (GTAT) are falling after research firm CLSA downgraded the stock in a note to investors today. The firm cited concerns about increased costs associated with the company's deal with Apple as the main reason for the downgrade. WHAT'S NEW: GT Advanced's costs associated with its deal to supply sapphire to Apple are being impacted by low yields, CLSA analyst Mark Heller wrote after speaking with strategic consulting firm Yole Développement. Lower yields will reduce the amount of sapphire that GT Advanced can produce for Apple, and will negatively affect GT’s profit margins, explained Heller. He believes that GT Advanced's risk/reward ratio is balanced at current levels, and downgraded his rating on the shares to Underperform from Outperform. However, he raised his price target on the shares to $19 from $18. PRICE ACTION: In late morning trading, GT Advanced fell 2% to $18.

13:00 EDTTGTEarnings Preview: Target cuts Q2 EPS view to reflect flat U.S. segment SSS
Target (TGT) is scheduled to report second quarter results before the market open on Wednesday, August 20, with a conference call scheduled for 10:30 am ET. Target offers merchandise at discounted prices through its retail stores and online business. EXPECTATIONS: Analysts are looking for earnings per share of 79c on revenue of $17.38B, according to First Call. The consensus range for EPS is 78c-91c on revenue of $17.28B-$17.5B. LAST QUARTER: Target reported first quarter adjusted EPS of 70c on revenue of $17.05B, against estimates for 71c and $17.01B, respectively. U.S. comparable sales decreased 0.3% in Q1, near the high end of the expected range. Target was unable to estimate future expenses related to the data breach that occurred in the fourth quarter of 2013, but said costs may have a "material adverse effect" on Q2 and FY14 results. NEWS: In July, Target named Brian Cornell as chairman and Chief Executive Officer, effective August 12. Cornell most recently served as the CEO of PepsiCo (PEP) Americas Foods. Chief Financial Officer and former interim CEO John Mulligan previously told CNBC that he would be "happy" transitioning back to CFO role. The company cut its Q2 adjusted EPS guidance to "within a range around 78c" from 85c-$1.00, which excluded approximately 2c related to the expected reduction of its beneficial interest asset, as well as any net expenses related to the data breach. The updated guidance reflects U.S. Segment essentially flat comparable sales with lower-than-expected EBITDA margin driven by promotional markdowns, as guests continue to spend cautiously and focus on value in the current environment, and Canadian segment's somewhat softer-than-expected sales combined with the impact of continued investments to clear excess inventory. The Q2 results are also expected to include gross expenses of $148M related to the December 2013 data breach. Mulligan commented that the environment in both the U.S. and Canada "continues to be challenging, and results aren’t yet where they need to be," but noted that the retailer is making progress in efforts to drive U.S. sales and traffic and improve Canadian operations. Target plans to extend the hours at over 50% of its U.S. locations in an effort to increase the number of customers who shop later in the day, according to the Wall Street Journal, citing a spokesperson. STREET RESEARCH: Goldman downgraded Target to Neutral from Buy and cut its price target to $59 from $65 to reflect estimate cuts following the Q2 pre-announcement, lack of catalysts, and e-commerce devaluation of general merchandise retailers. Baird thinks that Target may see better results later in 2014 and could restart its share buybacks at some point in the second half of the year, but sees stiff competition in Target's space. Wells Fargo wrote that the costs related to the data breach are on track to come in well below the $1B that some had initially feared. PRICE ACTION: Target shares are up almost 2% over the past three months. In intra-day trading ahead of tomorrow's earnings report, shares are up more than 1% to $59.35.
