The S&P 500 finished little changed this week as mixed U.S. economic data and continued geopolitical uncertainty offset strong earnings from a number of major companies and upbeat overseas economic data. MACRO NEWS: U.S. economic data was mixed, as fewer than expected jobless claims were reported and durable goods orders for June were slightly higher than expected, but new home sales for June and a preliminary purchasing managers' index for July came in below expectations... Investors received some positive economic news from overseas, as HSBC's preliminary China purchasing managers' index for July reached an 18-month high. Meanwhile, a preliminary PMI for the euro zone for July came in at 54, versus 52.8 in June... Ongoing conflicts between Israel and Hamas and Russia and Ukraine kept investors on edge, with Friday reports indicating that no truce accord had been reached in Israel and that Russia was building up its troop presence along the Ukrainian border. COMPANY NEWS: Among the notable companies whose stocks rose after they reported quarterly results were Facebook (FB), Apple (AAPL), Allergan (AGN) and Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG). Notable companies whose stocks sold off following their results included Netflix (NFLX), Harley-Davidson (HOG), General Motors (GM), Boeing (BA), McDonald's (MCD) and Pandora (P)... McDonald's was also hit this week by revelations that its restaurants in China had sold expired meat that was allegedly intentionally supplied by a China-based company. Yum! Brands (YUM) and a provider of products to Starbucks (SBUX) are also believed to have bought and sold expired meat from the supplier... In M&A news, Bloomberg reported that real estate website operator Zillow (Z) held talks about buying its rival, Trulia (TRLA). Both stocks surged. Shares of SodaStream (SODA) also rallied after Bloomberg reported that the company is in talks about selling itself to an investment firm that would take the beverage system maker private... On Monday, hedge fund manager Bill Ackman promised on CNBC that his presentation about Herbalife (HLF) would show why the company "is going to collapse." But the shares actually surged higher during and immediately after Ackman's presentation. Ackman has a large short position in the stock and notably alleged it is a pyramid scheme... BlackBerry's (BBRY) CEO told the Financial Times that his company was in early talks about partnering with companies to target the enterprise markets, in order to counter a recently announced partnership between Apple and IBM (IBM). INDEXES: For the week, the Dow fell 0.83% to 16,960.57, the Nasdaq rose 0.4% to 4,449.56, and the S&P was flat at 1,978.34.

08:47 EDTNFLXNetflix price target raised to $780 from $600 at Needham
Needham analyst Laura Martin raised her price target for shares of Netflix (NFLX) to $780 saying Charter (CHTR) and others offering the streaming service should drive U.S. subscription growth. Further, the company's international subscribers have up to three times faster profit trajectories than their U.S. counterparts, Martin tells investors today in a research note. Netflix will also add advertising revenue "someday," the analyst believes. She keeps a Buy rating on the stock. Netflix shares have sold off recently on Alibaba's (BABA) newly announced streaming service, Martin notes. But she points out China was not in her estimates for Netflix and that she doesn't expect a negative impact on other regions. Shares of Netflix closed yesterday at $654.02.
08:22 EDTAAPLApple iPhone demand holding up better than expected, says Pacific Crest
Pacific Crest says its initial estimates of iPhone component orders for the September quarter indicate that iPhone demand should hold up better than it had previously expected. The firm adds that iPhone demand appears to have remained solid in recent months, which should enable Apple's Q3 EPS to beat expectations. Pacific Crest adds that its more upbeat view on the iPhone is "somewhat offset" by its less positive outlook on Apple Watch sales. Nevertheless the firm thinks that the iPhone's improved outlook reduces the stock's downside risk. However, it keeps a Sector Weight rating on the shares.

07:17 EDTAAPL, SBUXUber previously had talks with Apple, Starbucks on logistics tie-up, WSJ says
Uber was reportedly in talks “in recent months” with Apple (AAPL) and Starbucks (SBUX) to create partnerships to help build its same-day product delivery program, but both companies instead went with startup courier service Postmates, the Wall Street Journal reports, citing people familiar with the matter. Uber launched its logistics service a year ago with plans to sign up with “dozens” of retailers, yet has announced partnerships with only six, the report says. Eat24, owned by Yelp (YELP), and GrubHub (GRUB) also held discussions with Uber but haven't reached any agreements, the report says. Reference Link

06:31 EDTFBBelgian Privacy Commission adopts first recommendation of principle on Facebook
The Belgian Privacy Commission said in a statement that on May 13 it adopted a first recommendation of principle on Facebook. "It has observed that Facebook 'processes' the personal data of its members, users as well as of all internet users who come into contact with Facebook. Facebook does this secretively: no consent is asked for this 'tracking and tracing' and the use of cookies. No targeted information is provided. The available information is vague and authorizes just about anything. Following the introduction of new worldwide terms of use by Facebook, a number of European privacy commissions queried Facebook, which was particularly sparing with precise answers and also refused to comply with the request to postpone the entry into force of the new terms of use. Facebook did not accept that it was bound by the national privacy legislation of Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany. It rejected the competence of those countries' supervisory authorities for privacy. Facebook only accepts supervision by the Irish privacy commission and the application of Irish law. After months of unsuccessful correspondence and fruitlessly exchanging ideas, the Belgian Privacy Commission has now adopted a first recommendation. This document establishes first of all that the Belgian Privacy Commission is competent and that Belgian law also applies to Facebook, simply because any national supervisory authority is obliged to ensure privacy protection for its citizens. And Belgian law also applies because the Facebook Group has an actual establishment in Brussels, Belgium. At the request of the Belgian Privacy Commission the inter-university research center EMSOC/SPION conducted a detailed study into the way in which Facebook deals with its members' personal data. And that of citizens who do not use Facebook or who explicitly opted out of its service. The research results are disconcerting. Facebook disregards European and Belgian privacy legislation in several ways. In 10 chapters an equal amount of issues have been uncovered. It is the Belgian Privacy Commission's ambition to thoroughly look into these issues. Until today, the eighth chapter - 'tracking trough social plug-ins' - has been the focus of attention, because it does not only impact Facebook users but also virtually every Internet user in Belgium and Europe. Up to this day Facebook refuses to recognize the application of Belgian legislation nor the Belgian Privacy Commission. Until now it has always contested the findings of the EMSOC/SPION research report, but it has not provided concrete facts repudiating them. To the contrary: Facebook recognizes that errors, 'BUGS' have been uncovered." Reference Link

06:10 EDTBAAirbus, Boeing, Lockheed among companies eyeing Sikorsky, WSJ says
Guillaume Faury, the president of Airbus Helicopters (EADSY), is said to be watching United Technologies' (UTX) plan to offload its Sikorsky unit, though Airbus has not committed to making a bid for its rival, The Wall Street Journal reports. United Tech said yesterday that it will sell or spin off Sikorsky, which makes Black Hawk helicopters, within the next two months. Sources say that in addition to Airbus potentially being interested in Sikorsky, there is also interest coming from Lockheed Martin (LMT), Boeing (BA) and Textron (TXT). Reference Link

05:29 EDTGMAlly Financial upgraded to Buy from Neutral at Goldman
Goldman Sachs upgraded Ally Financial (ALLY) to Buy saying the company's balance sheet restructuring is being undervalued at current share levels. Goldman believes the loss of the General Motors (GM) business is being overly discounted in the valuation and raised its price target for shares to $27 from $24.50.
