Stocks on Wall Street were higher, with the Dow and S&P 500 again making new all-time closing highs. The averages opened higher, with positive economic data potentially spurring buying early in the session. The indexes traded in a narrow range for much of the session, closing near their highs. ECONOMIC EVENTS: In the U.S., personal income rose 0.2% in November, which was below expectations, though consumer spending was up 0.5% in the month, matching expectations. The final reading of the Reuters/University of Michigan consumer sentiment index for December held steady at 82.5, consistent with the prior reading. The Chicago Fed National Activity Index had a very positive reading of 0.60, indicating growth well above recent trends. COMPANY NEWS: Apple (AAPL) gained $21.07, or 3.84%, to $570.09 after disclosing the signing of a long-awaited, multi-year deal with China Mobile (CHL), which has more than 750 million subscribers, to sell its iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c models... Jos. A. Bank Clothiers (JOSB) rejected the $55.00 per share takeover proposal made by Men's Wearhouse (MW) on November 26, stating that that the price proposed "significantly undervalued the company."." In response, Men's Wearhouse stated it was "surprised" and continues to consider all options, including nominating director candidates at Jos. A. Bank's next annual meeting of shareholders. Shares of both companies fell modestly following the news, with Jos. A. Bank losing 74c, or 1.3%, to $56.29 and Men's Wearhouse falling 38c, or 0.73%, to $51.63... Darden Restaurants (DRI) led all gainers on the S&P 500, rising $3.26, or 6.38%, to $54.35 after activist investor Starboard Value announced that it had obtained a 5.6% stake in the company. MAJOR MOVERS: Among the notable gainers was United Therapeutics (UTHR), up $26.67, or 30.36%, to $114.51 after the FDA approved the company's treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension and the stock was upgraded at JPMorgan and BMO Capital. Also higher was Xyratex (XRTX), up $2.85, or 27.27%, to $13.30 after agreeing to be acquired by Seagate Technology (STX) for $13.25 per share in cash. Seagate shares gained 35c, or 0.64%, to $56.01 following the deal announcement. Among the noteworthy losers was TESARO (TSRO), down $9.33, or 24.75%, to $28.37 after secondary endpoints were not met in studies of the company's drug in development for the prevention of chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting, though shares of the company were defended by analysts at no fewer than three firms. INDEXES: The Dow was up 73.47, or 0.45%, to 16,294.61, the Nasdaq was up 44.16, or 1.08%, to 4,148.90, and the S&P 500 was up 9.67, or 0.53%, to 1,827.99.
