13:01 EDTGMOn The Fly: Top stock stories at midday
Stocks on Wall Street were higher at midday amid another deluge of earnings reports. Stocks began the session in negative territory and have remained there through the morning before crossing into positive ground right near noon. The averages gapped up after making it back to the green, putting the Nasdaq back above the all-time closing record it achieved in 2000. A question for the afternoon will be whether the average can hold on to set a new all-time closing high fifteen years later. ECONOMIC EVENTS: In the U.S., initial jobless claims inched up 1K to 295K in the week ended April 18, versus the expected 287K first-time claims. Markit's flash manufacturing PMI fell 1.5 points to 54.2 in April, versus expectations for it to hold steady at 55.7. New home sales dropped 11.4% to a 481K rate in March, versus expectations for a less severe 4.5% drop to a 515K rate. COMPANY NEWS: Shares of Time Warner Cable (TWC) slid about 1% after The Wall Street Journal reported that the FCC's staff recommended a course of action that could derail the company's merger with Comcast (CMCSA). However, research firm Jefferies remained upbeat on Time Warner Cable shares, upgrading the stock this morning and saying that Charter (CHTR) would probably buy the company if the government nixes the Comcast deal... Among members of the Dow that issued earnings reports this morning, Caterpillar (CAT) slid fractionally while 3M (MMM) and Procter & Gamble (PG) each fell about 2%. MAJOR MOVERS: Among the notable gainers was ARRIS (ARRS), which jumped 21% after the company agreed to acquire its competitor Pace for aggregate stock and cash consideration of $2.1B. Also higher following their earnings reports were Skechers (SKX), which rose nearly 13%, and Dunkin' Brands (DNKN), which gained 8.5%. Among the noteworthy losers was MobileIron (MOBL), which plunged 22% after the company warned of a Q1 revenue miss and announced the resignation of its CFO. Also lower following their earnings reports were Texas Instruments (TXN), which fell 7%, and General Motors (GM), which declined nearly 4%. INDEXES: Near midday, the Dow was up 81.31, or 0.45%, to 18,119.58, the Nasdaq was up 22.69, or 0.45%, to 5,057.86, and the S&P 500 was up 10.32, or 0.49%, to 2,118.28.

13:54 EDTGM, FEarnings Preview: General Motors sentiment positive ahead of Q1 report
General Motors Company (GM) is expected to report first quarter earnings on Wednesday, April 23 before the market open with a conference call scheduled for 10:00 am ET. General Motors is a global designer and builder of cars, trucks and automobile parts. EXPECTATIONS: Analysts are looking for earnings per share of 97c on revenue of $37.61B, according to First Call. The consensus range for EPS is 85c-$1.07 on revenue of $35.71B-$39.36B. LAST QUARTER: GM reported fourth quarter adjusted EPS of $1.19 against estimates for 83c on revenue of $40.5B against estimates for $40.12B. In Q4, GM reported the following: Retail vehicle sales of 2.55M units; Total U.S. retail vehicle sales of 727K units and total North America retail vehicle sales of 854K units; Europe retail sales of 298K units; APMEA retail sales of 1.165M units; South America retail vehicle sales of 236K units; Total worldwide automotive market share of 11.4%, with total U.S. market share of 17.4%; Total Europe share of 6.3% and total APMEA share of 10.5%; North America capacity utilization of 98.9%. GM announced it intends to increase the second quarter dividend on its common stock by 20% to 36c per share. On March 9, GM announced a $5B share repurchase program. On April 22, GM said it sold 2.4M vehicles globally in Q1, up 2% from last year. Sales in China increased 9% and deliveries in North America were up 6%. STREET RESEARCH: Street research has been mostly positive in the weeks leading up to GM’s Q1 earnings report. On February 5, Craig-Hallum upgraded General Motors to Buy from Hold. The analyst said the company's Q4 report was superb and expects a very strong year ahead given recall issues that are mostly behind it and a continuation of impressive truck/SUV sales. Additionally, Craig-Hallum expects more shareholder-friendly actions following the announcement of a 20% common dividend increase. They raised their price target on the shares to $44 from $34. On March 10, Citigroup raised its price target for shares of General Motors to $50 from $49 saying the car maker's "earnings and overlooked progress" should hold more weight now that its capital allocation is in place. The firm continues to believe shares will trade at premium to Ford (F) by the end of 2015. It thinks the GM bears have "run out of excuses" and kept a Buy rating on the name. PRICE ACTION: GM shares have gained approximately 8% since Q4 results were released and notched a 52-week high of $38.99 in March. In afternoon trading ahead of Wednesday's Q1 report, GM shares are down 0.4%.
12:31 EDTBAOn The Fly: Top stock stories at midday
Stocks on Wall Street were higher at midday after having been on a bit of a see-saw during morning trading. The averages opened in positive territory, soon turned negative, then back into positive ground following the release of a better than expected existing home sales report. The housing data was followed by a lift in the averages, which remained in positive ground near noon. ECONOMIC EVENTS: In the U.S., existing home sales rose 6.1% to a 5.19M rate in March, which was better than the expected 3.1% increase to a rate of 5.03M. Crude oil inventories built up by 5.32M barrels last week, which was more than the consensus forecast for a 3.2M barrel build. In Asia, Japan's Nikkei 225 average closed above 20,000 for the first time since April 2000. In Europe, Germany raised its economic growth forecast for 2015 to 1.8%, which was up from the 1.5% growth it said it expected in January. COMPANY NEWS: Shares of McDonald's (MCD) advanced 2% after the company reported headline earnings that missed expectations but also said it is developing a turnaround plan to improve its performance and deliver "enduring profitable growth" that it plans to share in the first week of May. Also rising after its quarterly report was another globally recognized brand, Coca-Cola (KO), whose shares gained 1% after its comparable earnings per share topped the consensus estimate. A third member of the Dow, Boeing (BA), slid over 2.5% after its earnings beat expectations but its revenue fell short of the consensus forecast... Visa (V) rose 5% and MasterCard (MA) advanced over 4% after China's State Council announced overnight that the country will regulate the market access for bankcard transaction clearing institutions, which analysts think might allow both companies to compete for the processing of domestic transactions in the country. MAJOR MOVERS: Among the notable gainers was Angie's List (ANGI), which jumped 12% after the company reported it was profitable in the first quarter and announced an exclusive relationship that will see carpet manufacturer Shaw Industries give the company's members exclusive product offers. Also higher was ASML (ASML), which gained 11% after announcing that it has signed an agreement with one of its "major U.S. customers" to deliver a minimum of 15 ASML EUV, or Extreme Ultraviolet, lithography systems. Afterward, Summit Research said it thinks the most likely buyer is Intel (INTC), which the firm believes does not want to be left behind if TSMC (TSM) puts EUV to use in 10nm processing. Among the noteworthy losers was Natural Resource Partners (NRP), which dropped 19% after the company slashed its quarterly distribution by 75% to 9c per unit. Also lower following their earnings reports were ADTRAN (ADTN), which fell over 9%, Cree (CREE), which slid 9%, and Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG), which declined 6%. INDEXES: Near midday, the Dow was up 28.69, or 0.16%, to 17,978.28, the Nasdaq was up 6.66, or 0.13%, to 5,020.77, and the S&P 500 was up 5.24, or 0.25%, to 2,102.53.

15:16 EDTGMGreenlight starts new GM long position, rolls Lorillard short bet to Reynolds
David Einhorn's Greenlight Capital hedge fund said in its latest quarterly letter to investors that it had established new long positions in General Motors (GM), Chicago Bridge & Iron (CBI) and AerCap Holdings (AER) last quarter. WHAT'S NEW: Greenlight believes GM should benefit from low gas prices, low raw material costs, and its decision to launch share buybacks, Greenlight stated. GM has an excellent chance of beating 2015 EPS expectations, added the firm. Einhorn's group said they found the valuation of Chicago Bridge and Iron, an engineering and construction company with significant exposure to energy, attractive following the stock's decline. Although energy prices may stay low for some time, the company has a significant backlog that should support its earnings for several years, Greenlight stated. Additionally, the market is overestimating how much of the cost overruns for two nuclear energy projects with be shouldered by the company, Greenlight contended. AerCap, the largest publicly traded aircraft leasing company, bought AIG's (AIG) aircraft leasing business last year at a bargain price, Greenlight stated. The combined business will benefit from AerCap's low tax rate, as well as efficiencies, the hedge fund believes. WHAT'S NOTABLE: Greenlight exited its short position in Lorillard (LO). Greenlight noted that it has rolled its short bet on Lorillard into a fresh position in Reynolds American (RAI), since it still believes that the FDA is gearing up to do "something major" in terms of regulation of menthol cigarettes, but is moving "slowly and deliberately" because it anticipates an extremely aggressive industry response. The firm also exited two other short positions because the companies agreed to takeovers: Safeway (SWY) and Freescale Semiconductor (FSL), which has agreed to sell itself to NXP Semicondictors (NXPI).

09:08 EDTTMToyota to realign North American manufacturing operations
As reported, Toyota plans to invest in a new plant will be built in Guanajuato, Mexico, to support improved competitiveness in North America. The plant will produce Corolla taking into consideration forecasted steady, mid and long-term growth in North America. Building this plant will be one of Toyota's efforts to realign its North American manufacturing operations and begin a new approach to plant building; featuring new work processes, including Toyota New Global Architecture production engineering innovations, and will be a model for global manufacturing. To more efficiently supply high-quality and attractive vehicles, Toyota will continue regional consolidation of North American production based on vehicle body type and size. In 2019, production of the Corolla will be shifted from the plant in Cambridge Ontario, Canada to the newly opened plant in Mexico and the plant in Blue Springs, Mississippi will continue to produce the Corolla; consolidating compact vehicle production to the Southern U.S. and Mexico. TMMC will then focus its production on mid-sized vehicles of higher value, along with Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Kentucky and Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Indiana.
09:06 EDTTMToyota to build new plant in Mexico, expand Chinese joint venture
Toyota announced that it will build a new plant in Mexico and expand its joint venture, Guangzhou Toyota Motor Co., in China. These investments are grounded on its plans to construct production lines that are more competitive, with greatly reduced initial investment, improved efficiency, flexibility, environmental performance and safety, the company said. The new plant in Mexico and the expansion in China will be designed to accelerate innovation by implementing new technologies into real production lines. These "simple and slim" production lines can be easily lengthened or shortened depending on demand, with over-head conveyance devices eliminated, compact equipment installed on top of the plant floors, and paint-booths that are smaller. Toyota had previously suspended construction of new plants in order to improve capacity utilization of existing plants and plan for reduced model change-over and new plant construction investment. Currently, total capacity utilization is more than 90% and the initial portion of new simple and slim plant costs, including structure and equipment, is expected to be approximately 40% lower when compared to 2008. Production at the new plant in Mexico is scheduled to start in 2019 and the investment will be approximately $1B. Production at the new plant in China is to start as needed after completion of new line 3 in 2017 and Toyota plans to invest about Y52.5B.

13:26 EDTAAPLOn The Fly: Top stock stories at midday
Stocks on Wall Street were mixed at midday, with the Dow and S&P 500 slightly lower and the Nasdaq clinging to a narrow gain. The broader market opened in positive territory and the averages moved in a narrow trading range during the morning. The Nasdaq has been the strongest of the indices since the open, though early gains from Apple (AAPL) and Qualcomm (QCOM) had evaporated by near midday, taking a bite out of the gains the index had been seeing earlier in the session. ECONOMIC EVENTS: In the U.S., no major economic data was released. In China, export sales unexpectedly contracted 15% in March, while imports shrank 12.7% last month from a year ago. The March fall in imports was in line with forecasts, unlike the one for exports, which were expected to rise 12%. COMPANY NEWS: Activist investor Jana Partners is putting pressure on Qualcomm to increase stock buybacks and take other actions to increase shareholder value, including an exploration of spinning off its chip unit from its patent-licensing unit. In response to statements made by JANA, Qualcomm noted that it recently increased its stock repurchase authorization to $15B and repeated that it plans to repurchase $10B of common stock within one year. Barry Rosenstein of JANA Partners, while speaking on CNBC, said Qualcomm should buy back $15B of its shares over the next six months, before the company undertakes strategic actions that could move the stock higher... Apple shares were rising early in the trading day but had given up their gains by midday. Pre-orders of its new Apple Watch started Friday. The company did not release any sales figures for the first weekend, but research firm Slice Intelligence estimated that nearly one million customers in the U.S. preordered the device on the first day it was available. MAJOR MOVERS: Among the notable gainers were Alamos Gold (AGI), which rose 6%, and AuRico Gold (AUQ), which rose 7%, after the companies announced an agreement to combine via "a merger of equals" with a transaction equity value of about $1.5B. Upon completion of the deal, former Alamos and AuRico shareholders will each own approximately 50% of the new Alamos Gold and a new company, to be named AuRico Metals, will be created to hold AuRico's Kemess project and some other assets. The newly formed company will own a 4.9% equity interest in the spinoff and the remaining "SpinCo" shares will be distributed 50% each to former Alamos and AuRico shareholders. Also higher was Builders FirstSource (BLDR), which gained 65% after announcing that it has entered into an agreement to acquire ProBuild Holdings in an all-cash transaction valued at about $1.63B. Among the noteworthy losers was Basic Energy (BAS), which fell 8% after Raymond James downgraded the stock to Market Perform based on valuation, substantial pricing pressure, and industry overcapacity. Also lower were U.S.-listed shares of Sina (SINA), which dropped 5% after the Financial Times reported that China's government has warned that it will shut down the company's service if it does not "improve censorship." INDEXES: Near midday, the Dow was down 19.08, or 0.11%, to 18,038.57, the Nasdaq was up 7.93, or 0.16%, to 5,003.91, and the S&P 500 was down 3.04, or 0.14%, to 2,099.02.
